Tubal Ligation
Tubal ligation consent forms are completed by the patient and the prenatal care provider. Consents are reaffirmed prior to tubal ligation procedure.

Must be signed 30 days in advance and is valid for 180 days.
Components of counseling: - contraception options handout here - patient should consider Tubal Ligation irreversible. EthicsWomen who are informed regarding contraceptive options and who do not want to become pregnant should have the option of tubal ligation.
Why do we bother to consent during pregnancy?Why do we bother during pregnancy when patients rarely get the TL during postpartum stay?
Postpartum tubal ligation can be performed the day following vaginal delivery if OR time is available, an experienced surgeon is available and the patient's abdominal girth allows for the procedure. In addition, 1/3 have c-sections, TL can be done then if the consent has been signed. |

Where to referIf a tubal ligation could not be performed during the postpartum hospital stay counsel the patient and obtain consent. Refer to gynecology.
Why are there so many rules?To be certain that the decision to undergo sterilization is made by an informed patient.
